Swype 3.0 Beta released for Android

24 Swype 3.0 Beta released for Android

Good news! One of the premier keyboards for Android just hit version 3.0. The beta version just got released and is available from the Swype website.
This version comes with major new features including:

  • Tap Correction – allows the user to go from “swyping” and back easily.
  • The pop up word choices window has now been replaced (finally!) with a much more user friendly horizontal list above the keyboard.
  • Its now Honeycomb friendly, with a version specifically for WXGA screens.

As this is Beta software, you need to install it from their website directly (complete details are at http://beta.swype.com/), and bear in mind the warnings on the website before you proceed to install beta software on your device wlEmoticon smile Swype 3.0 Beta released for Android

Yeah yeah.. Blog finally getting some updates..

I know I’ve been a bit.. well, lazy..
I know I’ve been procastinating.. I know this site is still getting visitors.. so I thought I may as well get down to doing some updates!

I just did a site re-design with a new look and feel (barring the damn logo!! argh.. i need to do a new one again crap..), and now collating some nice little topics to write about. If there is anything in particular you want to see, leave a comment, and provided its not illegal or naughty, I just may spiel about it.

Oh yeah, I’m going to be a lot more informal about things now too.. Am getting too old to remain well mannered and non-cranky.

Google Adds Device Compatibility on its Android Market

Google Adds Device Compatibility on its Android Market

image Google Adds Device Compatibility on its Android Market

This was a pleasant surprise for me for sure. In addition to allowing users to remotely deploy applications directly from the website, Google has now included functionality to do a device compatibility check against registered devices.

I have an Asus Transformer Tablet in addition to my Samsung Galaxy phone registered and going into any application, you can now see which device the application will work on.

The market shows all applications regardless of device compatibility, so usually the only time you used to know if an application will work would be when you try and install it. Now, this message would save the users some time as well as looking very cool indeed!

Samsung Galaxy I9000 Replaced My iPhone

image thumb Samsung Galaxy I9000 Replaced My iPhone

After owning an iPhone for over a year, I’ve finally decided to replace it with a new phone. I had a choice between an iPhone 4 or an Android based device. Having an iPad helped in the decision to not purchase yet another Apple device. I wanted something different to play with.

Transitioning from the iPhone to the Android device was hard actually. I found out that to get the best out of your device, you need to know a LOT of things :). Everyday users will most likely use the phone as a phone and not much more. For myself, the actual phone functionality is secondary.

Only a few years ago, the first thing one does when they get a new phone is to set up the ringtones, messaging etc. The first thing I did when i got the new Samsung was to “root” (jailbreak for iphoners) the phone and set up my email and work apps. I didn’t even realise that the time on the phone was all wrong until the next day.

If you look at my current home screen attached, the phone icon isn’t even on the main screen.

The Samsung is not perfect, but I’m growing to like it a lot. Wifi tethering out of the box, the level of customisation as well as the ease of developing widgets/apps for it is something I’m looking forward to exploring for the rest of the year.

After finally setting up my homescreen just the way i like it, now am looking forward to putting the latest version of Android OS on it (2.2) – it should be out (via legitimate means) in the next day or so.

New Toy– finally bought a new iPad

Yup, took the plunge and got myself an iPad 3G 32gig. Already jailbroke it. Expect some iPad and iPhone posts coming through soon.

Because I travel frequently, I wanted to have a device that can work well with my iPhone and can replace the need for having a netbook as well as a paperback stored in my hand luggage.

The iPad has finally delivered an on the go solution that allows me to connect to my work machine whenever i need to, carry a range of electronic books and media with me for the plane/hotel and being able to browse on a larger screen (than the iPhone).

New Version of Bing iPhone App released

clip image001 thumb New Version of Bing iPhone App releasedBing just announced a new version of the free Bing Application for the iPhone that fixes a number of stability and usability issues.

The new version is only available currently on the US version of iTunes and over a million downloads have already been racked up.

I’ve had the fortune of using Bing on my iPhone and its actually quite a cool looking application and does what it promises. Its interesting to see where this goes especially given the fact that Google and Apple are going head to head with their respective phones. Bing just may become the default search engine on the iPhone.

For me as a consumer, this in combination with Google Apps meets most if not all my needs on my iPhone.

In addition, they have added additional features such as:

  • Ability to bookmark maps, sites, businesses and weather.
  • Sharing of results via email
  • Copy and Paste is now supported within the application
  • Search settings and Search history
  • Support for all versions of iPod Touch

You can get Bing for the iPhone via the following iTunes Link

Changes in Newbtech

As part of coming back, there are a few additional changes we need to make to the site. This includes incorporation of a new theme and look & feel.

We have now put in a placeholder theme until we work through all the kinks. On the whole, it doesn’t look that bad actually. Am working on a suitable logo that will replace the horrible over-size Impact font in the header.

Old Site Theme:

Return of Newbtech

coming soon2 Return of NewbtechI’ve got to admit that over the last few months I haven’t been giving this blog much attention. This is due to a variety of reasons including work, personal life and World of Warcraft to which I’ve returned to spend more time in the virtual world.

In saying that, I’ll be making an effort to return to blogging albeit with a slight difference in terms of topics for the blog. I’ll be broadening it a bit to cater for my current interests which includes everything so far on the blog and extending it to online gaming, coding and UI design.

If there is anything in particular that you wish me to write about, please let me know.

Some of these articles have already been drafted and expect to see them released in the coming weeks.

How to Install SkyDrive as a Network Drive via Gladinet (updated)

Recently I created a post (turned out to be one of the most popular on this site) to show how to install Live SkyDrive as a Network Drive using Gladinet.

At that time, Gladinet was still a Beta Program. Recently, they released Version 1 and there has been some significant changes to the instructions. I’ve now updated the post to properly reflect these changes.

I’m now using the free edition of Gladinet to connect to my SkyDrive, Google Apps and Google Picasa albums all via My Computer
